Nursing Practice

INA is committed to the continued quality of nursing practice and education, and the professional development of Registered Nurses in today’s workplace.

Our staff includes RN experts in practice, policy, education and labor to interpret the complexities of the Nurse Practice Act, assure the quality of nursing education and enforce those standards in our bargaining unit contracts. The Deputy Executive Director is constantly researching questions from nurses across the state looking to better understand their roles and responsibilities in various workplace situations. Moreover, with policies and procedures constantly changing, our Deputy Executive Director ensures that you will always have the latest information at hand. It is a service we are happy to provide to protect both your professional career and patient safety in Illinois.

ANA Code of Ethics
The Code of Ethics for Nurses was developed as a guide for carrying out nursing responsibilities in a manner consistent with quality in nursing care and the ethical obligations of the profession.  To learn more about the creation of the Code of Ethics, purchase a copy of your own, or view the nursing Code of Ethics online, please refer to the links listed above.

ANA Bill of Rights for Registered Nurses
As staff nurses, you are aware of your responsibilities on the job. ANA works to make sure that RNs are also aware of their rights in the workplace. The ANA-written Bill of Rights for Professional Nurses lists these rights, and helps nurses understand how to use them to benefit themselves and to advocate for their patients. ANA also uses this document as a tool to inform policymakers that these rights must be protected to ensure the delivery of safe, quality care.

Standards of Practice for the Registered Nurse
Standards are authoritative statements by which the nursing profession describes the responsibilities for which its practitioners are accountable. Standards reflect the values and priorities of the profession and provide direction for professional nursing practice and a framework for the evaluation of this practice. They also define the nursing profession’s accountability to the public and the outcomes for which registered nurses are responsible.

Joint Statement on Delegation from ANA and NCSBN
Both ANA and NCSBN have developed resources to support the nurse in making decisions related to delegation.
